Background of the Study
Online engagement has transformed language use, particularly on social media platforms, where informal interactions often lead to rapid linguistic evolution. In Nigeria, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram serve as dynamic arenas where morphosyntactic patterns are continually renegotiated. Users adapt traditional grammatical rules to meet the demands of digital communication, resulting in innovative sentence constructions, abbreviations, and code-switching that characterize modern Nigerian English (Olawale, 2023). These changes reflect both technological influences and broader social trends, contributing to the development of a distinct digital dialect. Social media texts capture this linguistic fluidity, where conventional morphosyntactic structures are modified to enhance brevity and creativity. Recent research suggests that these adaptations can both enrich communication and challenge established linguistic norms (Adeniyi, 2024). Furthermore, the interplay between online engagement and language use raises questions about the long-term implications of such shifts for language education and preservation (Egbunike, 2025). This study investigates how online engagement affects Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns by analyzing social media texts, providing a comprehensive view of language evolution in the digital age.

Statement of the Problem
There is growing concern that the rapid evolution of language on social media may lead to significant changes in the morphosyntactic patterns of Nigerian English. The informal and dynamic nature of online engagement encourages deviations from traditional grammatical norms, potentially compromising linguistic clarity and coherence (Olawale, 2023). This shift poses challenges for educators, linguists, and policymakers, as the long-term implications of these changes remain unclear (Adeniyi, 2024). Without systematic analysis, it is difficult to ascertain the extent to which online communication alters conventional morphosyntactic structures, leading to a fragmented linguistic landscape (Egbunike, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the morphosyntactic patterns prevalent in Nigerian social media texts.

  • To assess the influence of online engagement on traditional grammatical structures.

  • To explore the implications of these changes for language education and communication.

Research Questions

  • What morphosyntactic changes are observable in Nigerian social media texts?

  • How does online engagement influence traditional grammatical patterns?

  • What are the broader implications of these changes for language use in Nigeria?

Significance of the Study
This study investigates the transformative effects of online engagement on Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns, providing insights into how social media reshapes language. The findings contribute to our understanding of digital communication trends and offer recommendations for educators and policymakers to address potential challenges. By analyzing social media texts, the research enhances our knowledge of contemporary linguistic evolution and informs strategies for maintaining language clarity in the digital era (Olawale, 2023; Adeniyi, 2024; Egbunike, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses exclusively on the effect of online engagement on Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns in social media texts. It does not encompass other forms of digital communication or offline language use.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntactic Patterns: The combined study of word structure and sentence formation in language.

  • Online Engagement: Interaction and communication occurring on digital platforms.

  • Social Media Texts: Written content produced on social media platforms.
